UFOs, Computers & The United Nations?
Spotlight On One of Ufology's Greats

Pop Quiz! What person is credited as one of the "inventors" of the Internet, AND has spoken before the United Nations?

If you're thinking "Al Gore," then you fell for a set-up. My apologies.

According to his official site, French-born astronomer, Jacques F. Vallee was "present at the inception of computer networking, serving as project director for Arpanet, the prototype network for the Internet." He is currently a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur, and author of the newly released book, The Heart of The Internet.

Oddly enough, for an otherwise respectable person, Vallee is also one of the most prolific, best-selling and most quoted authors ever in the field of ufology. If you've seen the Stephen Spielberg movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," then you're already familiar with Vallee, even if you didn't know it. He served as the model for the United Nations scientist, "LaCombe," who suggested using music to communicate with the aliens (resulting in the five notes that probably 90% of Americans over 30 can hum).

He moved to the U.S. in the 1960's where he pioneered computer networking - believe it or not - for the purpose of building, analyzing, and exchanging databases of UFO reports with other researchers. Literally, if you enjoy surfing the Internet today, you have UFO research to thank! In the early sixties Vallee worked closely with J. Allen Hyneck, director of the Air Force's half-hearted Project Blue Book (considered today to be the government's concentrated effort to debunk and cover-up UFO sightings, more than it's stated goal of investigating them). Vallee would later often publicly criticize the government's handling of UFOs, claiming that they intentionally misrepresent the UFO reality and reports, for the purpose of manipulating public opinion.

Based partly on his official work, Vallee wrote his first book, Anatomy of a Phenomenon, in 1965, which is still one of the most exhaustive classics of UFO research available, and which has seen several re-printings. Breaking ties with the government completely, he would eventually publish nine UFO-related books (bibliography below). Along with former skeptic Hyneck, Vallee is today considered a "founding father" of serious ufology, in that he brought much-needed university credentials and scientific method to the subject. Appearing with Hyneck before the United Nations in 1978, he gave testimony and supported a U.N. effort to look into "the UFO problem." While it passed, unfortunately the resolution's sponsoring government of Grenada was overthrown later that year, and the issue of UFOs has never been discussed at open U.N. sessions since. (Insert favorite conspiracy theory here.)

But while an impeccable scientist, Vallee's findings are not as popular among many of today's UFO enthusiasts as his credentials and ground-breaking work might normally afford one. He soon became notorious among ufologists for suggesting that UFOs and "aliens," while certainly quite real, were almost certainly not beings from other stars. He even debated the point with Spielberg, whom he says replied "You're probably right, but ... this is Hollywood." read the full quote

Vallee championed what is now known amongst UFO researchers as the "inter-dimensional hypothesis" (opposed to the extra-terrestrial hypothesis). While not a religious person, Vallee documented in later books that modern UFO reports were identical in nature to demon possession, occult initiations, and the fairy abductions of medieval times - and much more numerous, cruel and sadistic than would be necessary if their goal were truly scientific. In 1979, he wrote that human beings had been forced into "a bizarre game of deception" by the UFO phenomenon. In another book he admits his astonishment that "...the very concept of a parallel between modern ufology and ancient folklore is still occasionally challenged by believers in the theory that UFOs are nuts-and-bolts spacecraft."

Despite his sometimes unpopular views among ufology's more public face, Valle's research is actually in very high demand by private UFO researchers. An online search reveals that books by this most revered name in ufology are getting hard to come by, and quite expensive. Hardback editions of certain Vallee books sell for well over $100. Here in Roswell, Turned Page II  carries a more recent one for $25. As a public service, I've listed Vallee's book titles below. I recommend that if you own one, that you either preserve it, or seek out those who are buying. And if you find one unknowingly priced for $1 at a garage or estate sale, buy it! Oh, and don't forget to read it. This remarkable man who gave us the Internet, made movie history, and lobbied the U.N. might just change your mind about a few things as well.

NOTE: Due to his current workload and goals in Silicon Valley, Mr. Vallee  politely declined my invitation to speak in Roswell this summer. But he did write the forwards to two very recent books by speakers at the upcoming Ancient of Days conference, being held in Roswell in July 2004. See www.AncientofDays.net to register to hear from Richard Dolan and Ann Druffel, authors of UFOs and the National Security State and Firestorm : The Fight for UFO Science.
